BC Land Title Fraud
Land title fraud is rare in British Columbia as BC operates under a Torrens-based registration system that provides some of the most stringent title safeguards in the world. However, it does occur as evidenced by news reports over the last year and considerable time and expense can be incurred in attempting to unravel and resolve the matter. Even though compensation may be obtained under legislative provisions (see "BC Land Title Registry" page) title ownership to the property may not always be restored. Mortages attached to property under any fraudulent circumstances can add further complications (both to titleholders and/or to lenders in view of two April/09 BC Court of Appeal decisions) Property ownership generally represents the primary investment for most individuals - protection for that investment is paramount.
